* At 1:18 into Born Cross-Eyed there is a source change to higher
quality stereo.

* The main source ends at 3:14 into Caution. The remainder of the
show is cross faded in from a SBDMR>?>Cass copy. The cut at about
3:14 was also on the cassette, picking directly back up after a
one second gap. No Caution vocals are contained on either source.

notes:
Crptical Envelopment through Born Cross-Eyed comes from an alternate
mono SBDMR source. It contained a great deal of static which was
removed with DePopper.exe.

Feedback before Spanish Jam contains many hints at the Spanish
Jam theme.

Also of note is that the end portion of Feedback appears on the
"Anthem Of The Sun" LP.

Comments from www.deadlists.com

(1) the version of Good Morning Little Schoolgirl that is on tapes in circulation with this date
is actually from 02/03/68 and was spliced in to replace the 02/02/68 version by David Gans for
GDH #310. This is the last show with one of the early versions of the Other one lyrics: When I
woke up this morning, my head was not in sight I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished
overnight I could not think or spell my name, or fly there was no way and the heat came round and
busted me for smiling on a cloudy day I was skipping through the lilly fields, when I came across
an empty space it quivered and exploded, left a bus stop in its place a bus came by and I got on,
that's when it all began there was Cowboy Neal, at the wheel, of a bus to never-ever land timings
should be updated since Feedback is included in Viola Lee Blues.

(version C2)

The tracks from "Tuning Break" thru "Midnight Hour" appear to be from a different
source than the rest of the show (which is pretty clean). These tracks have a significant
increase in the amount of tape hiss present. I found it to interfere with my enjoyment
of the music.

I created Hiss Reduced versions of these tracks for this supplement. I also
crossfaded the real change (?) at ~11:40 in Alligator so that it doesn't
blow your tweeters out! If you wish to create a CD using these HR tracks, simply use
them instead of the ones in the main distribution. The main distribution files were
the source for these supplment tracks.

I used Sound Forge Noise Reduction to do the hiss reduction and other "voodoo".
The tracks which were modified are included in the directory with this file.

Here are the tracks that this supplement replaces:

7. Midnight Hour

This is a very strange show. The start of Lovelight is clipped, with the recording improving from what is a ragged condition at first. The sound system has technical difficulties, with an intermittent buzz during portions of Lovelight from a bad electrical connection. There is some minor static at 9:30 of the first track. The vocals are very low in the mix, and difficulties with the sound system might explain a lack of singing during the second set, though the jams are very inspired. The recording includes a group chant between sets, which may include members of the band, crowd, a woman who sounds like Grace Slick, a child, an imposter-drummer, security etc.

The Confusion:
--There has been a great deal of confusion regarding the date of 8-22-68, and this shn set still has several uncertain elements. Maybe some of this info can help:
--"source 1" (mono), has circulated fairly commonly under "8-22-68", though the Alligator that accompanies that recording is actually the version from 8-21-68. Still, there is no certainty that this material covering Stephen through New Potato is from 8-22. It does not match any other circulating material, though, and the intro from Bill Graham clearly places this at the Fillmore. Furthermore, this show may circulate with Dark Star as the opener, as it follows the Bill Graham intro. However, Bill Graham introduced the band at the start of each set in those days, so I've kept Dark Star where it was on my copy, in position to start the 2nd set.
--"source 2" is in stereo, and has been dated as 8-22-68 from David Gans. This portion often circulates following an alternate mix of the material that would make up "Two From The Vault" (8-24-68).

Other bits of reference:
--Phil's bass is out of tune during New Potato on 8-22, unlike the phenominal 8-24 version
--the Alligator from 8-21 differs as it does not segue into Caution
--the Alligator/Caution from 8-23 differs in that it does not segue into WBYG after Feedback
--the minor cut in Feedback on 8-22 may be disguised on some copies

Lastly, this probably isn't the end of confusion for 8-22, but as of Jan '03, it's a best guess

2. flaws noted by mvernon
d1t2 - drop out ~2:44 - 2:47
d1t3 ~ initial vocals extremely weak, barely audible
spectral analysis shows almost no frequencies higher than ~5khz, imparting a distant, slightly "tunnel" sound. Nevertheless, it is quite listenable.
3. Vol. 1 of the Taper's Compendium lists a "Schoolgirl" as the first number along with a Bill Graham introduction. At this time these are no longer associated with this date.
4. Deadlists has the following comments:
The first two bars of Dark Star are clipped. In the first verse, Jerry sings: "Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes. Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis." And then, instead of "Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion" he sings: "Glass hand dissolving... recedes in the nights of goodbye". He realizes he's out in no man's land as he sort of trails off a bit while singing "goodbye". The next verse is: "Shall we go, you and I while we can, Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?" He sings "transitive NIGHT fall of diamonds" as if expecting Phil to hit the high harmonies, but realizing as soon as he sings "night" that no one's coming to the rescue.

I brought this back home with me from Arizona on a HD last june
and I finally got around to preparing it for CDr

What I have came from a DAT>ZA2>wav>(sound forge for cutting
to track size)>shn

All CD switches come at natural breaks in the sets.
Timings used are very close to those listed below from the
Dead Project but not precisely the same.

The last Jam in Set 2 is complete here and not cut like on the
Dead Project list below.

The sound mix differs from set 1 to set 2: Set 1 has everything
in the left or right channel with just about nothing in the
middle of the sound picture. Whereas in Set 2 Jerry's gitar is moved
to the middle, better balancing things out.

Set 1 had a bit of hiss. I used 'Diamond Cut - Audio Restoration
Tools 32' to remove it. There was a stretch in the beginning
before Jerry starts playing where I could get a good sound sample
of the hiss for the removal.

Jam (4) 16:28#

Comments: show billed as "Mickey and the Heartbeats".
Bobby and Pigpen were absent. (1) starts very much like the
post-drums portion of Alligator, and contains a
brief, Spanish Jam-like theme. It also contains many hints of
Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks). (2) cut here is
likely quite small. (3) with Paul Butterfield on harmonica.
(4) very similar to New Potato Caboose. My copy cuts at
16:28, but there is clearly more.

Here's what deadlists has to say about this source

COMMENTS    The circulating copy of this that is MSR>Cass>DAT>CDR has an
announcer who clearly states before Dark Star that the Grateful Dead played an
earlier set. Circulating tapes all cut at the very beginning of New Potato
Caboose and splice into the Feedback. DeadBase XI lists the end of this one as
New Potato Caboose going into Alligator > Caution > Feedback > AWBYGN, which is
probably just speculation on what's missing - but that would be a good guess
based on the song list and time period.

DEADLISTS COMMENTS

" The tapes circulating with this date are from a "Heartbeats" show, without Bobby and Pigpen. (1) with Harvey Mandel (and George Chambers?). This jam has previously circulated as "Set 3" of 12/16/68, but Bill Gadsden says that
it's "with Harvey Mandel from 12/24/68".

From the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper of Monday December 23, 1968 pg 35: "At the Matrix tonight and tomorrow night: Jerry Garcia, Jack Casady, open end jam, no door charge" and elsewhere on the same page under the heading "OPENING TODAY": "ROCK CLUB - Jam Session with Jerry Garcia, Jack Cassady and others, from 9:30 p.m., the Matrix, 3138 Fillmore. Free."

On page 26 of issue #34 (Summer 1996) of Dupree's Diamond News, Dick Latvala stated in an interview "There are tapes of 12/16/68 marked Hartbeats at the Matrix, but I don't know if that's really accurate. You know [David] Crosby was
playing with them quite a lot that month." He makes no other mention of 12/68 Matrix tapes in that article, but he has stated on another occasion that the tapes in the vault of 12/24/68 are labeled as Garcia jamming with the Harvey
Mandel Band. This show is not listed in DeadBase XI.
RECORDING    SBD 31 mins.
Circulating recordings of the 1968 Matrix shows trace back to Bill Gadsden's reels. Bill and Peter Kafer made copies of Peter Abram's (owner of the Matrix) two track 7" Scotch reels in the summer of 1974. Peter
Abram's reels were either Masters or 1st gens.

Although this fragment circulates as "Fall 1968", "3/22/68 Detroit", and "May 1968", it is from an unlabeled reel. There is an entry for this set list on p. 164 of Volume 1 of The Deadhead's Taping Compendium. According to Rob Eaton: "There were 5 unlabeled 7 inch reels found in the Vault many years ago. Several contained very early versions of Stephen. The tape you describe is one of these unknown reels. The best estimate for a date would be April/May 1968 or spring '68."
