From Deadlists:
COMMENTS Pigpen plays harp on Dupree's. The Avalon Ballroom insisted that
bands, including the Dead, play short sets of an hour or less. This may
well be the complete first set.

Notes:
The length of all these sets supports the short set restriction by the Avalon.

Lovelight fades in.

* Announcement made at the start of disc two indicating the Dead leaving the stage,
Sons of Champlin being introduced and that the Dead will be back for another
set.

Sound Forge was used to normalize, correct the pitch, and remove or lessen a number of blemishes. Some small blemishes remain, though none are offensive. Although the exact lineage of this recording is unknown, the sound indicates no more than two analog generations before the transfer to digital.

Total disc time: 68:32

Notes:

* - 11:29 minutes of the Alligator Jam > Caution segment
were missing from the previously seeded version of this
show and have been patched into the current version
from an alternate partial SBD source containing the
Alligator ====> Feedback segment and bearing the same
lineage + one cassette gen. The corresponding Feedback
segment of the alternate SBD source is also missing
approximately 2:00 minutes of Feedback that are actually
present in the current version before any patching from the
alternate SBD source. The current version would then
appear to contain the complete Alligator ====> Feedback
segment of the show for a total timing of 28:54.

The disc picks up with the last 04:59 of Dark Star.
If Deadbase XI is accurate, this disc is missing Dupree's,
Mountains of the Moon and the better part of Dark Star.Total
disc time prior to patching in the missing 11:29 from the
alternate SBD source is 57:03. Total time per Deadlists and
Eaton's list is 84:00. If the Eaton version is missing the 11:29
minutes of the Alligator Jam > Caution patched from the alternate
SBD source, this could logically account for the resulting 27 minute
time difference.

It is possible that there is one less analog generation in the lineage (as listed at Deadlists). The sound quality is rather ragged despite fairly low levels of hiss, so this may simply be from old and degraded cassettes with only one analog generation.

There is a minor splice just before the 7:00 mark in Schoolgirl from what sounds like a cassette recording overdub. It has been cut out and smoothed over with Sound Forge. There is a minor dropout in Dark Star roughly 18 minutes in. The splice in Lovelight occurs just after the 6:00 mark. The quality of the recording diminishes during the Cryptical Reprise where tape (not from the master) ran out. Overlapping tape segments were spliced seamlessly at this point using Sound Forge. Therefore, no music is lost although there is diminishing sound quality for the first half of the reprise. Alligator>Caution>Feedback>AWBYGN often mistakenly circulates at the end of this show, but is actually from 8-22-68. This show may or may not be complete. Edits, tracking, and pitch correction for various portions were performed using Sound Forge and CDWave.

Thanks to Jim Hale for this underrated performance.

Most info on this shows a cassette generation or two but this one does not appear
to have one...there are no cassette flips at the usual spots! May have another reel
generation though.
Music was very slow (offspeed recorder somewhere in the history). I increased the
speed by 4% and this sounded pretty good. Didn't want to go too far.
Used a light continuous noise filter to remove a bit of the tape hiss.
Cleaned up a few assorted pops and gliches...
There was distortion in Good Morning Little Schoolgirl that could not be improved.
All editing done with Diamond Cut Millennium software.

Dark Star > Saint Stephen appear on Live Dead.

The following edits were performed:

24:865 seconds (the 00:10 second Bill Graham Intro
and 14:865 seconds of GMLSG) were patched from a
previously circulating alternate SBD source with
lineage of SBD > ? > C > CD. The multi-track volume
was sampled where the track fades in and the patch
was normalised and pitch corrected to match the multi-
track's levels.

The Eleven has a brief splice in which 1) a 9.5
second silent gap was removed and 2) the volume on the
section following the splice was normalised to
match the levels of the sampled section preceding the
splice.

The show was then re-tracked as indicated by the
track timings per the setlist.

Known flaws:
Light static of unknown origin on the last thirty seconds of
Dark Star(22:52.611-23:22.480) > the first twenty five seconds
of St. Stephen(0:00.000-0:25.467)

Splice in Lovelight cuts at 0:17.815 on the master. A 0:01.355
silent gap after the splice was removed as well as a 0:00.300
segment prior to the splice in order to create a better flow from
the splice > the section in which the selection continues. The start
of Lovelight through to the splice was normalised +7.5db to better
match the flow of the selection up to the splice with the segment
in which the selection continues.

The Lovelight cut is on ALL known sources. One possible suggested
explanation for this is the possibility of a temporary power outage
common to the areas where the various taping equipment setups were
located. Sounds like a logical explanation for a bizarre happening!
Anyway, it seems to have been only a couple of minutes (if anything)
that were effected here.

Various segments of tunings and onstage banter prior to the Bill Graham
intros and the Hey Jude encore have been cut from the multi-track source.
These were subsequently spliced in from the alternate sources noted below.

The following alternate sources were used in editing the multi-track source:

1. SBD > Cassette Master > C > DAT > ZA2 > WAVs >SHN > CDR > DAT > WAV
2. SBD > 2-Track MSR > D > D > D > D > CD
3. SBD > 16-Track MSR > C2 > DAT > CD

Alternate source info for spliced portions:
0:59.372 seconds of pre-Bill Graham Set One intro tuning: 2-Track MSR > D > D >
D > D > CD
0:31.200 seconds of pre-Bill Graham Set Two intro tuning: 2-Track MSR > D > D >
D > D > CD
2:26.538 seconds of pre-encore stage banter: 2-Track MSR > D > D > D > D > CD
3:32.318 seconds of pre-encore stage banter: Cassette Master > C > DAT > ZA2 >
WAVs >SHN > CDR > DAT > WAV

The majority of the show was re-tracked after completing the above edits.

This is a SBD from a bootleg CD with unknown generations. There is a signignificant hiss and no noise reduction was performed. The songs were retracked before shn encoding. Deadbase lists Morning Dew and Alligator before Hard to Handle, though this information is uncertain. There is a splice near the beginning of The Eleven.

The recording was pitch corrected using Sound Forge

The Dead shared the billing with two other bands, and this may be the complete show for them, although there could be a song or two missing after Schoolgirl.

The recording was pitch corrected and normalized using Sound Forge. Track boundary errors were also fixed.

COMMENTS from deadlists
Total time [1:36:18 +]. This show was broadcast live on KPFA-FM
Berkeley. The FM broadcast, from which the circulating tape derives, cuts
in during Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. The cassette master of the FM
broadcast from which these timings come has cuts, both brief, during
Cryptical reprise at 6:20 and 7:09. At 10:48 into the Viola Lee Blues the
Dead's instruments lose power, Bobby says "It seems someone is trying to
tell us something" and they finish the tune with a chorus of vocals only.

COMMENTS Total time [1:12:35 +] Obviously the 1st set list is incomplete;
probably Cryptical Envelopment > drums > preceded The Other One but possibly
something else. Likely more tunes are missing before that, too -- if the
tape catalogued under SET 1 represents the second side of a cassette master,
then there's 45 minutes missing previous to where the tape cuts in.
According to the review of the show by Richard Saltus in the Arizona Daily
Star for 4/12/69, they also performed versions of Morning Dew and Sittin On
Top Of The World. Presumably these tunes belong before That's It.

There is a Main Ten jam in Dark Star, starting at 9:53 and running till
11:05, a total of 1:12; this is the first known occurence of this kernel and
prototype of Playin In The Band. There is a cut in St. Stephen at 3:26;
probably a couple minutes are lost here.

There is also a cut in The Eleven at 3:54, with a passage of jamming of
uncertain length lost (perhaps as little as 20 seconds but also possibly as
long as several minutes). The Eleven analyzes St. Stephen > 1st vocals
1:05 > transition jam 1:21 > Eleven jam 1:#40 > Eleven vocals 0:40 > Eleven
jam 1:04 > transition 0:06 > Lovelight.

COMMENTS Jerry plays glide guitar on Hard To Handle. According to Ron
Ramsey, who attended the show, the other bands on the bill were SRC (a local
group), and the Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground played a very
long set and as a result the Dead only got to play one set on this date.
According to Ramsey the Dead did the same thing to the Velvet Underground
the next night.

NOTES

: Tape degradation at the beginning of Morning Dew; decreases throughout the track

: announcers are audible when Me & My Uncle cuts in; once they stop talking, the quality of the recording changes. As a result, in my opinion this whole recording may be from a radio broadcast, or someone might have patched that bit in to a mildly degraded SBD.

: Alligator cuts in with vocals.

: On http://www.deadlists.com, Jim Powell sez: "There is at least one additional drummer (a conga player) involved in the prolonged percussion jam following Alligator, and probably several -- sometimes said to be Santana's rhythm section. At the beginning of the drums someone probably not Jerry is playing guitar percussion (i.e. clicking a pick across damped strings). The "jams" interspersed are Jerry jamming with this percussion ensemble. There is also an unidentified additional vocalist audible twice during Lovelight. It is possible this tape is actually from 5/11/69; see Comments under that date."

COMMENTS Total time [2:30:05 +].
There are two SBD masters of this show --
reels and cassettes. One master has 6 minutes cut from the Cryptical
reprise; the other master (or circulating copies) cuts in just after the
beginning of The Other One and runs unbroken through to the conclusion of
the set. Between them, the two masters contain the complete show.
Composites circulate, but also many partial combinations and unpatched
fragmentary versions of That's It For The Other One. Collector beware.

The Eleven analyzes: St. Stephen > 1st vocals 1:06 > transition jam 2:25 >
Eleven jam 3:21 > Eleven vocals 0:42 > Eleven jam 2:53 > 2nd theme jam 1:41
> transition 0:48 > Lovelight.

SBD of parts of this show have circulated for years, sometimes mislabeled
"Family Dog 8/29/69." About an hour of FM excerpts were broadcast in the
early 90s. Copies of one of the masters only emerged recently and optimal
complete composites are finally beginning to circulate.

Rob Bertrando writes: "The partial reel master of 6/5/69" is plagued by
'scrape flutter.'" Eaton's list reads:

*without Jerry Garcia; with Elvin Bishop
**without Jerry Garcia; with Elvin Bishop; with Wayne Ceballos

The splice in Checkin' Up @ 1:14 is very minor, and hardly noticeable

For unknown reasons, it appears that Jerry Garcia is missing for the first 5 songs, and Elvin Bishop plays lead guitar. The crowd, Phil & Bob acknowledge the missing Garcia after Smokestack, which must be the opener. Wayne Ceballos adds vocals for Checkin' Up and BIODTL. A faintly heard voice off microphone could be Garcia's just before Checkin' Up. Two days later during the same run, Pigpen ended up a spectator for some songs while Bishop & Ceballos sat in, so it seems possible that this is the case with Jerry, given a laid back atmosphere.

Deadlists vaguely indicates that this represents all of 6-6-69. However, it seems likely that some music may be missing before Lovelight. The guests are not present during Lovelight, and Garcia is playing on this version. This is perhaps the longest version of Lovelight known to have been played, clocking in at just under 47 minutes.

Sound Forge was used to correct the pitch of the recording.

The first set has clearer sound and a slighter hiss than the second set, owing to the different recording media, though this lineage is not certain. Elvin Bishop and Wayne "The Harp" Ceballos are present for the first three songs of the 2nd set. Ceballos sings Lovelight, which Pigpen apparently sits out. Bishop sings The Things I Used To Do and Who's Lovin' You Tonight, with Pigpen joining in at times. Bishop also plays lead guitar for the three songs with the guests. There are a few, minor, very faint pops during the second set, and two very minor blemishes during Drums and The Other One during "Spanish Lady Comes To Me...".

Garcia plays pedal steel guitar for Slewfoot, Silver Threads, Let Me In, and Dire Wolf
(which notably, Bob Weir sings lead). There is a slight dropout/splice at 1:04 in Hard To
Handle. There is a splice in Mama Tried. Slewfoot cuts in near the beginning at "better get
your rifles...". The first couple notes of Silver Threads are clipped. The end of Me & My
Uncle is cut, with possibly a minute missing. The beginning of Doin' That Rag is clipped.
The quality of the recording drops in a drastic manner at Doin' That Rag as there is a great
drop in recording levels, which also begin to fluctuate at this point. The recording
improves during Lovelight, which has a minor splice near the end. No noise reduction was
performed. The pitch was corrected using Sound Forge.

The beginning of St. Stephen has some slightly ragged degradation for a few seconds. There
is a minor splice during the first few notes of Baby Blue. Casey Jones is cut. The
beginning of Lovelight is clipped. Some of the minor volume level fluctuations were
adjusted using Sound Forge. Major volume fluctuations render much of Baby Blue as virtually
unlistenable, and this is noted on the master at deadlists.com. There is some oversaturation
during louder moments of the second set.

Great disc! The sound quality is exceptional IMO, it almost sounds like it was

Jerry Garcia - Guitar
Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar
Jack Cassady - Bass
Mickey Hart - Percussion
Spencer Dryden - Percussion

Known Flaws:
A high pitched tone which was present on my CDR copy at roughly 0:12 - 0:23
of track 01 was edited out using EAC's wave editing function.
A 1-second pause at about 14:19-14:20 on the master dt06 was edited out also using EAC.

The Star Spangled Banner is performed by an unknown person on a pennywhistle. According to Deadbase, Hard To Handle & Casey Jones were played after Morning Dew, Me & My Uncle & Cold Rain & Snow were played after Mama Tried, and High Time was played after Next Time You See Me. There is a noticeable popping noise throughout most of the recording that is almost certainly from the reel recorder. It is not overpowering, though, and seemingly dissipates as each reel is used up. There is a minor dropout during the second portion of Dark Star.

This is one of the more muffled and hissy master cassette SBDs from the '69 era. It sounds like there could be several analog generations in the lineage, though the lack of crisp sound quality might mostly be attributed to the master, which is reportedly degraded. Many analog related crackles and blemishes were embedded in the recording. Sound Forge was used to smooth or reduce most of the glitches, though many minor blemishes remain. Sound Forge was also used to normalize and correct the pitch.

The tapes of the 10th come in two parts, both in excellent quality. Most of what we have from this date comes from a MSR > D containing nearly all of one set. The other tape, containing That's It For The Other One > Cosmic Charlie#, most often circulates labeled "12/10/69," as the second half of a cassette side, following the 12/11/69 Dark Star. (For more on this curious piece of tape, see DeadLists for 12/10/69.) Probably they played 2 sets on the 10th, as on the other nights, and probably That's It comes from the other set from the material on the MSR > D, but the evidence does not show which set is which and can be argued both ways.

Thelma Theater, Los Angeles, December 10, 11 & 12, 1969

Copies from the soundboard reels of these shows have circulated since the '70s, sometimes mislabled "Kaleidoscope Theater, LA," often with dates and sequences mixed up, usually in badly degraded sound quality. This set assembles complete copies of the 11th and the 12th in the best quality circulating. Except for the middle portion of the 11th, sound is excellent throughout; this inferior segment is listenable while leaving definite room for improvement if an upgrade shows up; we haven't been able to find one & don't want to delay further.

Many people gave help on the way to creating this set of CDs. Dave Greenberg did the final masters. Jack Warner was instrumental in providing the difficult composite for the 2nd disc of 12/11/69, which was first mastered by Scott Clugston. RB, KW, JN and HB also provided important assistance. Jim Powell instigated the project and writes these notes. SHN conversion by Jay Gerland.

This is not the complete show, and is missing Me & My Uncle, Hard To Handle, Cumberland Blues, Black Peter, and Dark Star>St. Stephen in the span between High Time and The Eleven. The missing songs are quite possibly missing from the vault reels as well. This is the first known version of New Speedway, which has some very off-key harmonies, ----that sound as if they are almost intentional and sarcastic ????.

Transfer to CDR from a Sony ES 60 DAT to a Pioneer PDR555 RW Standalone burner via optical cables. CDR was then ripped to the Hard Drive with EAC in secure mode, amplification to 100% in Cool Edit 2000. Poorly placed track markers corrected with CDWave then transferred to shn using mkw SHN. Discs written on a Digital Research 24x burner using Nero.
