Caveat:
--This recording undoubtedly has a number of analog generations and is therefore quite worn and muddy. This show has not circulated in digital as of October 2002, though. I might only recommend this to the completists or serious fans of early '71 Dead.

Notes:
--This is almost certainly not the complete show. The order and set markers are also uncertain. It seems likely that JBG would end the first set, and it is purely speculation that China->Rider is from the 2nd set. The other songs are vaguely indicated as 1st set material according to deadlists.
--Sound Forge was used for normalization and to correct the pitch.

* first performance

The original reels of the Port Chester run of '71 were audibly
tainted due to a cable problem. The result is a tone which hovers
around 8000 Hz with an amplitude of about +20 dB above the noise
floor. This translate to a very annoying pitch, especially during quiet
sections, which is in the old-tv-tube or lousy-hard-disk or maybe even
the-sound-you-hear-after-you-slam-your-head-against-a-concrete-wall
class of 'whine'. Because this interference is 'monochromatic' it's
easy to get rid of if you have the processing power and a quick
FFT algorithm. I used the filter-shaping capabilities of the Sonic
Foundry Noise Reduction Plugin to tailor a very narrow notch filter
which attenuated the interference without affecting the rest of the
signal. And it's all done in the digital domain. Huzzah!

As a side note, I actually ended up crafting many filters to process
these shows. The frequency of the interference actually drifted anywhere
from 7700 to 8100 Hz during a given show. This was probalby due to a
slightly wandering reel speed. It made my work harder but when I tried
a much wider filter I started to be able to hear the attenuation in the
music. The filters generally go like this:

25 dB /- - - - - - - -\
/ \
/ \
0 dB | |
7830 7900 7970

The end result is no more annoying whine!

I also removed some of the nasty mic feedback in the 2/18/71 Bertha
using this type of filter.

Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre Port Chester NY

02-19-1971, Port Chester, NY
Complete show
An ESP experiment show; the second Betty Board; first show without
Mickey Hart.

genealogy of this recording:
7" two track BBD reel w/ Dolby A @ 7 1/2 ips > PCM501ES @ 44.055 kHz
PCM501ES analog out > Fostex D5 @ 48 kHz (Dolby not decoded?) > WAV >
Cool Edit Pro (filtering and sample rate conversion) > SHN data files
(seed)

The recording is in mono, and reflects very occasional analog tape
flaws such as bursts of flutter. These flaws are from the master. The
lineage information available states that Dolby A decoding was not
performed, but the sound is nevertheless very good and does not sound
compressed.

As with the other Port Chester recordings, a slight whine comes and
goes throughout the recording. We have applied a very light notch
filter as needed. The filtering was accomplished using Cool Edit Pro,
and consisted of a sequence of notch filters at and around 8k, approx
1k wide and only 2db in depth. The filtering was mainly during the
in-between banter but also on the songs where required - more so the
2nd set. In The Other One there were two short bursts of static that
appear to have come from the stage, and these were reduced in level.
No other filtering was performed.

As indicated in the set list, Bird Song is cut. There are also
several cuts on the master during crowd noise before Truckin' starts
the first set, but who cares?

Indicated timings in [ ] are of the music, not of the track.

Notes:

The short story:

1) I removed the whine (~8000 kHz tone at about +25 dB) from this show
that was present with the source reels using Sonic Foundry's Noise
Reduction algorithm, as I did with the earlier uploaded Port Chester
shows (2/18, 2/21, 2/24). For an explanation of the noise and how I
removed it, see http://members.home.net/orf/notch.html

2) There are a couple of dropouts/glitches which I have
cleaned up as well as I can. These occurred when the DAT tape was
"ripped" to disk.

3) This show is as good as you're gonna get as far as I know because of
the NR and the excellent remastering from the original reels!

4) I've kept in all the intersong tuning/whatever. I figure others can
edit them down if the wish. I like having it there, sometimes funny
things are said and done :) plus you can always just hit FFWD on your CD
player remote to get to the next song!

The long story with regards to 2) above:

The DAT tape, a clone from the "whatever became of the bettys" tree a
while back, was borrowed and was read in on an old SGI indigo which has
firmware which can read DAT audio tapes and dump them to 48 kHz AIFF
files. Alas, I do not own a DAT machine and digital sound card, but I am
saving my money! Anyhow, the error correction on the SGI DAT drive was
pretty crappy, and there were a few dropouts/glitches on the read which
lasted anywhere from less than 1/75 s to a handful of seconds.

I have at my behest a professional quality DAT machine at a community
radio station I volunteer for (WORT) and brought my home tape deck in
which is a Harmon Kardon TD 4600, one of the earlier Dolby S decks (WORT
does not have a computer with a digital sound card). It is a very good
deck for analogue. The DAT deck at WORT was able to handle all of the
bad spots for this show that were not handled well by the SGI. I made a
dobly S copy of the bad spots, and pasted over (using an analogue AWE64
Soundblaster to go A->D) the glitches/droputs on the SGI read using
Sound Forge. The result is as good as i could do. Bear in mind that the
total amount I had to paste over represent a total of about 20 seconds
across the entire show, and I was able to 'fix' them completely. The
worst section was during Drums where there were a couple of sections
where up to on the order of 5-10 seconds wasn't read, and hence was
pasted over with the analogue copy. I leave it up to you to find them :)

most of the original glitches, and the ones that remain were due to bad
spots on the DAT, that the WORT deck was unable to handle. Bear in mind
that the total amount I had to paste over represent a total of about
15 seconds across the entire show, and I was able to 'fix' 99% of them
completely. There are one or two dropouts/bad reads that are very short
(mostly in Casey Jones which Betty fucked up anyway ;)

For the curious I left about 1 second of the original noise that I
filtered out. It's at the very very end of track 1 on disk 2 after the
crowd noise fades.

The Grateful Dead
04/17/71 Set I
Dillon Gym, Princeton University, Princeton NJ

[This is the first set, the second set was circulated previously]

Growing up near Princeton, this show was one of the first dead tapes
I ever heard. My copy was probably S:RCCCCCCCCCCC but I loved it anyway.
I later received a much better copy (sounded like 2-3 analog gens) with
a really lame flip at 45 minutes (aka middle of King Bee).

When I first got my DAT deck, a kind soul (thanks Mike) spun me a copy
of the set. This copy had a cut in Lovelight but beat the analogs any day.
I finally found a copy without the infamous cut in Lovelight and decent
levels to boot.

Since this set was worth the trouble of getting different copies
at least 5 times, I figured that I'd distribute it further than it has
been until now.

The lineage of these files is:
Main: S:R?D
DAT was downsampled into my computer via ZA2 (48>44.1)

This tape is NOT an A+, healy master to DAT, multi-track remix, 96bit A>D
conversion. This is from a reel made in 1971, so you will hear some rough
bits. To the best of my knowledge, this transfer represents the best
circulating copy in existence.

The lineage of these files is:
Main: S:R?D
Dub: S:RPD
Both DATs were downsampled into my computer via ZA2 (48>44.1)

The Main tape sounds much better than the dub - which is only used for 1.1
seconds (want to find it? Listen to the last time the guys say "the blues"
in Bobbi McGee)

Given the differences in the reel flip (at the end of lovelight)
I would guess that the 'Main' tape represents a separate A>D transfer than
the 'Dub' tape. If you know more, I'd love to hear about it.

This tape is NOT an A+, healy master to DAT, multi-track remix, 96bit A>D
conversion. This is from a reel made in 1971, so you will hear some rough

--->    I moved Casey Jones D2 to D1. While the file names within the
md5 files have changed, the md5 signatures themselves have not.
--->    This recording is afflicted with a dozen or two very brief
(tenths of seconds) PCM dropouts. While that is unfortunate,
this appears to be the best recording of 4/24/71 in circulation.

single AKG 190E mic > Uher 4000 Report-L 5" Reel deck
Taper: Marty Weinberg

Analog to Digital Transfer: 1/2 track tapes on a
Revox A-700 (tweaked the head azimuth to match the original
recording). Signal fed into DigiDesign Pro Tools on a
Macintosh with Audio Media III sound card. The only post
processing was normalization.

Final digital version assembled by: Noah Weiner - noahbw@home.com

note: Weinberg recorded each set of this show on its own
reel. Both were in very delicate condition at the time
of the transfer (Summer 2001). The set two reel was
degraded so much in sound quality (a tremendous loss of
high end frequencies) that it proved better to used an older
cassette copy of the set two reel for this new distribution.
Also, Sing Me Back Home, Sugar Magnolia, and Casey Jones
had been recorded over on the master reel at some point
prior to the Summer 2001 digital transfer. Evidence of the
current state of the set two reel can be heard on the set two
intro, the first 23 seconds of Bertha, and the set two outro,
which do come from the master reel.

Also, the track list for set one differs from what prior
record keeping indicated. However, this new track order is
direct off the master reel. The old order seems to indicate
that songs were possibly rearranged to fit them more
comfortably onto cassette.

Warning:
This is a mono audience recording of seeming moderate distance from the source of music. This might only be of interest to serious collectors. There is a crackling distortion that can be heard through much of this recording. It sounds like the microphone is frequently bumped/rattled as well.

Deadlists comments:
This show is usually listed on tapes and in Deadbase as 8/24/71. But, according to Dwight Holmes the circulating aud tapes for this show were made by Stephen Wade, who says that he only taped the first show (8/23) and not the second (8/24). Additional evidence from Jeff Tiedrich also indicates that this is 8/23 and not 8/24.

Sound Forge was used to correct the pitch of the recording.

Warning:
There is a bad connection between the PA system and the FM feed. This causes a buzzing that pops up throughout the show, accompanied by a total loss of amplitude for several seconds at a time. Nearly every song has several of these dropout episodes up until OMSN, with a few ocurrances in the 2nd set. Otherwise, the sound quality is not stellar either, and has frequent distortion and overmodulation on the portions from the primary source. The final portion of the 2nd set on disc 3 is slightly better quality, and the lineage might have one less analog generation, though this cannot be confirmed. Due to the technical problems, this entire show might only be for the completist collectors, and casual collectors might only be interested in the 2nd set.

Notes:
--Sound Forge was used to normalize and correct the pitch for source 1.
Normalization was applied to the final portion of the 2nd set. Other minor edits were done using Sound Forge as well.
--buzzing and dropouts occur frequently up until the 2nd set; there are often several during each song
--dropouts from tech problems @ 7:05 & 7:25 in O1

This is a crisp sounding mono FM recording. Though the lineage is uncertain, the sound is indicative of having no more than one analog generation before the transfer to digital, and it seems probable that the master was transfered straight to digital. Brief moments of minor distortion occur throughout the recording.

Sound Forge was used for some very slight pitch adjustments, normalization, and removal of several minor pops.

Good early Dead. Features Jerry and a heckler getting into it over the song
Truckin'. Also features good Bobby banter.

As with most older recordings, this has it's own minor occasional blemishes.
The recording is almost 30 years old ;-). Unfortunately the encore is missing,
but I have not seen this show widely circulating so I decided to seed it.

Enjoy!
