==================================================
I immediately listened to "Two Souls In Communion" and it's fantastic!!! I
skimmed through the rest and found "Big Boss Man" AFTER "Dark Star".
???,
that's not right, right?
It sounds like to me that "Dark Star" was spliced in where "Big Boss
Man" is
supposed to be. The track markers don't. line up, but are switched right?
I'm going to correct this & upload it sometime within the next 24 hours to
our main group in SHN only. PLEASE leave the doors open for this post. Up to
this point this has NOT circulated in such HQ.......... Hopefully the
remainder of the AOM shows will be circulated soon!
Being a Betty Board, there is some anomalies, slight buzz & a touch of hiss,
but I'm not going to edit that now, since I just want to get this out.

There are several masters to this show, of varying quality and
completeness. I had seven different CDRs made from low-generation cassettes
(dating back to the 70s and 80s) of the different masters. I also considered the
previously circulating MC>C>D>CD of the Dead set, but ended up using none of it
since there are just tons of hiss on that one.
The following sources were used in this compilation:
set one:
source A - low-gen reel > C > CDR
source B - MC > C > CDR; different master than source A
Wow Wow Hey Hey 1:30 tape warbles; 7:09 tape cut.
Jam (d1t11) 0:37 and 0:40 tape cuts.
set two:
source C - low-gen cassette > CDR
source B - MC > C > CDR, patch only, inferior sound than source C
beginning through Take It All Off 1:13 is from source A, the rest
is from source B except for Take It All Off 3:53 through 0:20 of Mona,
which were missing on source B and have been spliced in from source A.
Smokestack Lightning 11:40 through 12:08 spliced in from source B.
... there are doubtlessly more of these unavoidable anomalies.
A few "pause button" cracklings have been smoothed.
Some careful EQ'ing has been applied to remove some of the high freq tape hiss.
Playin' In The Band and Lovelight are both missing their beginnings.
There is only one known AUD master which supplies these songs, and even
anything from Bertha onwards.
Black-Throated Wind, Deal, Good Lovin' and Casey Jones, though present in
Deadlists, are completely missing.
Only 'How Sweet It Is', 'Are You Lonely For Me'

I was approached by Mick Etherington about finding and
putting together the best possiblesources for his only Dead show, the Bickershaw Festival.
Bickershaw was a 3 day festivalwith many popular bands of the day. By all accounts the
weather was cold and rainy with mudeverywhere. The cold weather wreaked havoc with the
equipment and the band and it madeconditions extremely unpleasant for concertgoers. Mick
recalls sheltering under the soundtower from the rain, wet and tired after a long
weekend.Mick had long harbored the dream of getting the whole show together after having
listened tothe second set from Dark Star onwards that had circulated for some time. What
Mick startedultimately became an effort spanning 2 oceans and 3 or so continents to find
all versions ofthis show that were known to be in circulation. We eventually turned up
many pieces of thisshow, some workable, others not. We were only able to identify one of
the tapers, Chris Jones, who did a good job considering the circumstances. Mick introduced
me to Dave Lang who providedmany of the versions used here and he was able to connect me
with other people who providedtheir alternate versions.I approached Steve Barbella to
locate someone with the knowledge and proper equipment toanalyze, clean up and sew
together the bits and pieces. Steve suggested Scott Clugston andI subsequently mailed him
a large stack of discs. Scott examined all the source material andthe result of this
effort speaks for itself. Scott supplied his copy of soundboard materialthat was used on
discs 3 and 4. After some consideration he decided to use only audiencetapes for discs 1
and 2 since the soundboard segments we obtained were of poor quality.Scott considers this
to be one of the more difficult projects he has worked on and I thankhim for his time and
talent. Only a few hours after I initially released this "new" show, Steve
contacted me to say thathe had heard from Seth Kaplan and that he had a version of the
soundboard that did not have acassette generation in it. We agreed to recall the few
copies that we released and to seewhat Seth had. Seth had the same partial set 2
soundboard only it was remastered by BillGiles, whose comments follow below.Scott
contacted me regarding this new soundboard version and according to him:"I've spoken
at length with Jeff Tiedrich regarding the Sbd portion of this show.....here'sthe
scoop;-)........when the more complete copy of the 2nd set began to circulate, we weretold
that the lineage was MSR>DAT.....after listening, and based on the hiss levels,
thepedigree was questioned and the source came back and said that it was possible that
therewas a cassette gen present, but couldn't confirm one way or the other........being a
bitconservative when it comes to pedigrees, we opted to list this new copy (with the
BettyBoard patch in The Other One) as MSR>C>DAT........this was approximately March
of2000.........I never gave it a second thought and since then, Jeff has confirmed that
whatwe have (and patched) is MSR>DAT......"In all likelihood, Scott's version has
the same lineage as this upgrade. This upgrade has a very nice patch that restores the
opening notes of Dark Star. Also, Bill scrubbed some broadband noise from the quiet
passages of that song. I did an A/B comparison of discs 3 and 4 and found that the 2
versions were identical in quality except for the patch ofthe first 5 notes of Dark Star
and a slightly reduced noise level during certain quieterpassages in Dark Star. The other
advantage to using Seth's version of the soundboard is a little extra banter at
thebeginning of disc 4 before Sugar Magnolia and some excerpts of assorted stage banter
that wasplaced after the encore.I verified and fixed sector boundaries with shntool and
seek enabled all tracks with seektables appended using shn v3.Enjoy the show,Alan

in tracking down other sourcesThanks to Simon Philips and Simon Mould for providing me
with their sources "I'd like to pass on my sincere thanks to all involved in bringing
this to fruition."- Mick Etherington"Little did I know at the time that two of
the shows that I taped are now regarded as 'master'audience recordings. Jeez, I'm so glad
I did. If Alan wants to know, the recorder I used wasan early Pye Cassette recorded with a
hand-held mic."- Chris JonesNotes by Bill Giles:"Bickershaw:I'm 100% confident
that this remastered version *is* the best in circulation. When GavinLawson kindly sent me
his CDR some months ago, his source's lineage showed a cassette gen.In contrast,
Tiedrich's Resources for Traders said the best source had no cassette gen."This
version starts with Dark Star (but missed the first 5 notes which I've patched in froma
poor denoised and re-equalised SBD cassette. It's OK!! You'd never know if you hadn't
beentold). It is not the Betty Board, the circulating copy of which only starts in the 1st
verseof TOO (33 mins late!)."The Dark Star's a true beauty, er blissfully spatial in
the 72nd degree......... but thesource contains a lot of broadband noise - a bit like
there's glass reverberatingintermittently but frequently on your speakers (or, if you're
grooving in the cans, insideyour head). Sometimes it's one channel, sometimes the other,
sometimes both. Real irritating. David Hollister confirms that the noise is on the
original master reel and that he had nottried treating it because broadband noise is not
susceptible to general scrubbing. So, to cutanother long story short, I've been through
each and every burst of noise in Dark Star, channel by channel, and tried to clean each one
individually. Well, it's one way of gettinginto the music :)) The result's not perfect and
never would be, but all the noises areattenuated and some are removed. It's definitely
very OK, the basic sound is first class. Most important, the MUSIC IS OUTTASIGHT."The
other problem with the source is a 30 sec cut in TOO and the absence of stage
announcements(in particular Weir's "we've forgotten how to play St Stephen.......
maybe we could go backand listen to our records and cop our licks" rap, and apologies
for yet another technicalproblem "Garcia's got to clean his glasses". (Weir was
really on good stage rap form on thistour)). I've patched in the music and announcements
from BD>DAT>CDR (Betty Board), courtesy ofSteve Nicholls. I had wondered whether to
use the Betty as the master source from when itenters in TOO onwards, but comparative
listening shows the non-Betty is the better and clearersound - drums are crisper,
instruments brighter - whereas the Betty has some bass saturationand is slightly muddier
in the middle. (Very appropriate for Bickershaw, ha ha.)"Finally, as a reminder of
the atmospherix of the event, I've added a few other moments of theconcert from the poor
quality SBD cassette, denoised (though you might not think so!) andre-equalised, as a
brief filler. In particular 'Happy Birthday Billy' and Weir explainingthat, to keep warm,
they are playing under 30 knots of jet breath from hot air heaters andgetting dizzy with
the smell of kerosene....."For those who don't know (or need help remembering) just
how wet, muddy and great it all was,you can read more about the Bickershaw festival -

This is a speed corrected and restored version of the complete 4-disc set that is
circulating. It replaces that set and an older 3-disc version that cut off during
"Comes A Time".
The 4-disc source was missing the beginning of "Dark Star" and "He's
Gone".
Those parts were restored using clips from the 3-disc set. Also restored was
a short blurb from Weir at the end of "Morning Dew". "Ramble On Rose"
has been
moved to the beginning of disc 3 where it belongs. Detailed notes on the
restoration are below.
Thanks to terrapinstation for providing the newer 4-disc set that this was based on.

Source tapes:
SourceA - A complete version of the show and the primary source for this
recording, but the beginning of "Dark Star" and "He's Gone" are
missing.
Tape speed is fast by .95% to 1.5%. Volume levels on most tracks had been
pushed to the point that there is digital clipping, although it is largely
inaudible. Disk 1 has several clicks.
SourceB - A 178 minute version that ends part way through "Comes A Time",
but with a complete "Dark Star" and "He's Gone". The volume levels are
7 dB lower than SourceA, there is more tape hiss, and it runs 2.25% slow.
Both of theses sources came, ultimately, from the same soundboard tape.
For this restoration, I used Cool Edit Pro as my WAV editor. Also used were
Sonic Foundry's Clipped Peak Restoration tool from Noise Reduction 2.0a, and
Wave's X-Noise noise reduction tool from Restoration Bundle 1.0.
Noise reduction was done only on the missing parts of "Dark Star" and "He's
Gone" from SourceB. All tracks had the DC Offset corrected to zero. And
most of the tracks were run through Clipped Peak Restoration with the
post-limiter enabled.
The speed correction probably won't be noticable to anyone but musicians who
try to play along with the music. <G>
Silence that was removed was actual silence, not quiet time between songs.
Finally, I changed no EQ settings or volume levels except on the clips from
SourceB.
* Disc 1 (all tracks slowed by 1.25% except T13, 1.5%)
D1T01 Removed click at 3:08
D1T03 Removed click at 4:04
D1T06 Removed click at 4:40
D1T07 Smoothed tape transition at 4:40
D1T10 Removed 18 seconds of silence at the end of the track and a 2 1/3
second clip that was a repeat of the beginning of "China Cat
Sunflower". How it ended up here I'll never know.
D1T11 Removed clicks at 2:40 & 2:47 & 2:54
D1T13 Removed 2 minutes 48 seconds of silence at the end of the track
* Disc 2 (all tracks slowed by 1.5%)
D2T02 Smoothed tape transition at 3:19
slowed 1.75%
D2T03 Remove 7.4 seconds of redundant sound at 4:54.
slowed 1.75%
D2T04 Removed 1/3 second of redunant sound at 0:18.6
* Disc 3 (all tracks slowed by .95%)
D3T01 Remove 2 minutes 39 seconds of silence at the end of the track
D3T02 After speeding up SourceB 2.25%, boosting volume levels 7dB, and
applying noise reduction and EQ, the first 1:13 was pasted onto
the beginning of the SourceA "Dark Star". Not quite as seamless
as the "He's Gone" patch due to differences in the stereo fields
of the two sources, but still pretty darn good.
D3T03 SourceB had this line from Weir tagged on at the end of this
track. I cleaned it up as best I could and added it to SourceA.
"We're gonna pause for a moment, and scratch our asses and
drink a little cold and wet liquid."
* Disc 4 (T01 & T02 slowed by 1.25%, the rest by .95%)
D4T01 Speed up SourceB 2.25%, boosted levels 7dB and applied noise
reduction to match SourceB to SourceA. Patched 39 seconds, the
intro and 1st verse, from SourceB onto the beginning of SourceA.
The splice is undetectable except for a subtle shift of the
vocal in the stereo field.
D4T06 Removed 34 seconds of silence at the end The splice is undetectable except for a
subtle shift of the
vocal in the stereo field.
D4T06 Removed 34 seconds of silence at the endnd

Note: This is superior to all circulating copies. The lineage of the DAT
is guaranteed. I did the transfer myself. The DAT was played on a Panasonic
SV-3700, transferred to my Delta DiO 2496, recorded with SoundForge 4.5, and
tracked and burned with CD Architect. EAC was used to create the SHN files.
There is a <1 second patch in Playin' to fix a small spot of tape warble.
The Morning Dew was patched from another previously circulating version with
10-second crossfades on each side to minimize the difference in quality.
There is also a small patch in Sugar Magnolia.
All of these patches came from previously circulating copies.

This shn set is an edit of a previous shn set made by Tim OConnell mtmoc@home.com, who
patched in the aud portions and edited out tape squeal. Sound Forge was then used to edit
for a new shn set, with pitch corrections for the aud portions, normalization for the
entire recording, and retracking for four discs, as well as other minor edits.
Notes:
--the audience portion is somewhat degraded, though pretty listenable
--nearly every track provided by the audience recording has the first few notes clipped
due to taper conservation, though all such cuts are minor
--reel glitches @ 3:49, 4:12, & 4:56 in Cumberland
--minor splice @ 12:33 in Truckin'
--mix/equipment problems during Sugar Magnolia

The exact lineage of this show is uncertain, though evidence suggests that it has 3 analog
generations. This is not among the better sounding SBDs from '72, though I have never seen
a prisine copy circulating.
It seems possible/likely that Ramble On Rose did not conclude the show.
Sound Forge was used for pitch correction and normalization.

Resource for tapes suggests "It's possibly an FM as there is a WMAL station
announcement on the tape"; however I think it's far more likely that this is radio
station interference with the PA/recording equipment.
In conversion from source discs it was necessary to remove 4118-sample gaps from Disc #1
(this corresponds to approx 1/10th of a second, not the 2-second gaps one would expect
with TAO) between most tracks. For disc #2, the gaps were 89377 samples (2 seconds + a
little bit). Removal of these gaps from discs #1 & #2 left seamless joins. For disc
#3, there were 133477 sample-gaps (3-and-a-bit seconds!!), and minor repairs were
necessary at each gap to avoid clicks. A very small number of additional clicks and gaps
were removed - many remain, especially right at the beginning of disc #1.

Set 1 is from a degraded SBD. There is a very high degree of oversaturation, especially at
the beginning of the set, and decreasing by the middle of the set while still being
evident throughout the SBD portion of the show. A better sounding recording of the 1st set
almost certainly exists, but I have not seen this set anywhere in the digital realm (June
2002). Sound Forge was used to normalize and correct the pitch of the SBD portion.
The 2nd set is provided by a very good audience recording, credited to Bear. Sound Forge
was used for a slight pitch correction.

--This is an outstanding audience recording for the era, reportedly recorded by Bear on 7

--there were quite a few areas of diginoise during the first 2:20 of Bertha, and during
portions of BTW, El Paso, and Sugaree. Sound Forge was used to stifle or remove many of
them, though some are still somewhat abrasive. These flaws seem to exist on all CD copies
of the show.

This recording has major mix problems. Most significantly, the vocals are very low
throughout, at times being barely audible. The guitars are way out in front and are in
different channels.
There is a clicking noise that starts up near the end of Stella Blue. It continues into El
Paso and gets very severe for about thirty seconds within the first minute. It continues
into Friend of The Devil as well. It is unknown whether this problem originated on the
master or during a digital transfer. It seems likely to have originated from an early DAT
in the provenance, as I have not heard of a copy without it, keeping in mind this is a
rarely circulating show.
This show is often listed as a reel master. The trademark zip-outs from reels running out
are not present, which supports the likelihood of this being mastered on cassette. Besides
the mix problems, the sound quality is very good for a cassette master.

This a very good audience recording from the era, varying somewhat. There is a splice in
Dark Star at 11:20. The recording was normalized using Sound Forge, and some track
boundaries were fixed.
An outstanding bass solo launches right out of a complete meltdown during this Dark Star.
There is also a very fast Feelin' Groovy jam towards the end. This Dark Star approaches
perfection.
Huge thanks to Jeff Cook for sharing this one.

This came to me with a reported SBD>MC>D>CD lineage, though I have reason to
believe that there is an analog generation before the transfer to digital. There is some
light oversaturation throughout the recording.
This is a monster version of Playin', and as I've heard, a favorite of Dick Latvala's.

comments:
The 1st set certainly has several analog generations, possibly three cassette generations.
The 2nd set has slightly more hiss than most other shows with a similiar lineage from the
era.
notes:
first couple notes of BTW clipped
0:10 crackle in BTW
0:25 splice in Bobby McGee
Sound Forge was used for normalization and minor edits.

* Most of Set I Missing
** Encore listed in both DeadBase X and DeadLists show the encore to consist of Johnny B.
Goode only. The authenticity of the encore on this disc is thus in question. Johnny B.
Goode begins immediately after last drum beat of UJB and may be a separate song, rather
than a continuation of UJB.
